Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is an holistic, complementary therapy that uses essential oils to balance the mind and body. Essential oils are plant essences, which are extracted from the flowers, leaves, bark or roots of plants. Each essential oil has its own therapeutic properties and uses, allowing it to be targeted at specific conditions. The oils can be taken into the body by absorption through the skin, inhaling and smelling.

What will happen during the first session?

The first part of the session will be an assessment, to find out which oils are most suitable for you. I will be asking you questions about your past medical history and your current problems. It would help if you brought details of any medication with you, to ensure that I have all the information I need. After this chat, I will ask you to undress – ladies to bra and pants, and men to pants or shorts. Then I will look at your posture, movement, etc, to get a full assessment of your condition. Once we have determined a maximum of 3 main problems that you would like to be targeted, I will blend your personal massage oil, and we can begin treatment. The full body massage takes about 1 hour, and covers your back, legs, arms, stomach, neck, head and face. If you are uncomfortable about any part of your body being included in the massage, please let me know.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

q  You will be most comfortable if you wear loose clothing

q  Ladies, please remove make-up, as I will be applying oil to your face during the massage

q  Men, unless you have a beard, please shave, as it will be more comfortable for you when I massage your face, and the oils will be absorbed into your skin more efficiently

q  Please remove all jewellery

q  It is best not to have a massage on an especially full nor empty stomach, as either can be distracting for you

q  You should empty your bladder before the treatment, so you are comfortable

What does massage do?

Massage is used in aromatherapy for several reasons:

·         It is an efficient method of helping the skin absorb the essential oils, which are diluted in a carrier oil

·         It is both physically and mentally relaxing

·         It helps the body to eliminate toxins

·         It stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killer

·         It increases blood flow, which can help healing

·         It feels good!
