What
are knots?
Muscle
knots, or myofascial trigger points, are the hard, painful areas that are
commonly found in the muscles across the shoulders. But they may also develop in
any muscle of the body. They are caused by muscle spasm in response to an
injury, overexertion, stress and fatigue, or poor posture. The connective tissue
(myofascia) within the muscle then contracts, and quickly forms a knot.
Knots vary
in size, shape and depth. They hurt when they are pressed, giving a so called
‘good pain,’ but they may also refer pain to other areas of the body. The
initial knot can then give rise to many others, as the body tries to compensate.
Knots are
treated by applying pressure and releasing the connective tissue of the muscle
around them. It is important to also find and treat the cause of the problem, or
they will simply form again. The main trigger point may be located deep within
the muscle, especially if it has been there for a long time. In that case, the
layers of muscle above it need to be released first.
Knots can
be treated, so you should seek professional advice to untie them. In the mean
time, you may find some relief by applying heat. Try to avoid overworking the
affected muscles, and do not overstretch the area.
