Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps people to improve the way they move and function, enabling them to achieve their full physical potential.

How long will the treatments take?

The first session will normally take 1 hour. The length of treatments thereafter will vary from patient to patient. I will discuss this with you after the assessment, so you will know in advance.

How many times will I need to have physiotherapy?

The number and frequency of treatments also depends on the individual’s needs. It is important to remember that it is not always possible to solve all problems. I will advise you on when it is no longer beneficial to receive physiotherapy, and on other possible suitable treatments.

What if I am having other treatments too?

With your permission, I will contact your GP and any other health professionals currently treating you, to inform them that you are also being seen by me. This is to ensure that there is no conflict of treatment. If everyone involved in your care is working towards the same goals, it is better for your rehabilitation.

What will happen during the first session?

The first part of the session will be an assessment, to find out which treatment is most suitable for you.

Will I have to take any clothes off?

You may need to take some clothes off so that I can see the part of your body that I am treating. If you would prefer not to, or would like someone else present too, please let me know.

What are treatment goals?

In order to help your problems, it is helpful to decide on specific goals to aim towards. These focus our sessions, and help motivate you when working in between treatments.

Will I have to do exercises?

In some cases, exercises can help you to achieve your goals, by improving movement, strength and balance. However, they can only help if they are done regularly!

My carers are having some difficulties. Can you advise them?

As part of the assessment, I will ask you about any care you are receiving, and if there are any problems. If I feel I am able to help, I can work with your carers to see if we can overcome any difficulties.
